Lactation services frequently asked questions

What does a lactation consultant do?

A lactation consultant provides expert guidance and support for parents who are breastfeeding, combo feeding, or pumping. Services include latch assessments, feeding plans, troubleshooting concerns (such as pain or low milk supply), and emotional support during your feeding journey. We can also help create back to work plans, or discuss preparing to leave your breastfed baby while traveling.

Who can benefit from lactation support?

Any parent feeding a baby can benefit. Common reasons people reach out include:

  • Difficulty latching

  • Painful feedings

  • Concerns about milk supply

  • Feeding twins or multiples

  • Returning to work and pumping

  • Weaning support

  • Bottle or supplemental feeding

When should I book an appointment?

You can book an appointment anytime—prenatally (to prepare before baby arrives) or postpartum. Many parents find support most helpful within the first days to weeks after birth.

Where are you located?

Our office is located in Mission Valley in the Well Mamas Counseling Center at 2831 Camino Del Rio South Ste #206. The building is called “Rio Sur” and has brown wood paneling.

Do you offer in-home visits?

Yes! In-home visits provide hands-on support in the comfort of your own space. Virtual appointments are also available for added flexibility.

How long is a typical visit?

Most initial appointments last 60–75 minutes follow-ups are 45-60mins. This allows time for a full feeding assessment, discussion of your concerns, and creating a personalized feeding plan.

What should I expect during my first visit?

Your consultant will:

  1. Review your health and birth history

  2. Observe a feeding (if possible)

  3. Assess your baby’s latch and weight gain

  4. Answer your questions and provide a tailored plan

You’ll leave with clear steps and ongoing support options.

Do you work with insurance?

Many insurance plans now cover lactation services. We are in-network with United Healthcare PPO, Aetna PPO, Cigna PPO (through Wildflower), Tricare / Triwest, and UCSD HMO Managed Care Plans. We can also provide superbills for reimbursement. Please inquire about coverage when booking.

What if my baby won’t feed during the visit?

That’s okay! Even if your baby isn’t ready to eat, we can still assess positioning, review pumping techniques, and answer your questions.

Do you bring a scale?

Yes, we bring a pediatric scale that is gram sensitive. We can weigh your baby before and after eating to see how much milk they are taking in when they breastfeed.

How many visits will I need?

It depends on your goals and concerns. Some families find one visit is enough, while others prefer ongoing support throughout the first months.

Do you support formula or combination feeding?

Absolutely. Our goal is to help you feel confident and supported in whatever feeding plan works best for your family.
